Migrant ruling A US federal judge yesterday temporarily blocked the Trump administration from expelling Asian migrants to war-torn Libya after an emergency appeal from the would-be deportees’ lawyers. District Judge Brian Murphy said such deportations would violate his previous order that migrants being sent to a country other than their own first be given a “meaningful” opportunity to challenge their removal in court and show that they may face persecution. Murphy’s ruling came in response to an emergency motion from lawyers for migrants from Laos, the Philippines and Vietnam who said they were in “imminent” danger of being deported to Libya — “a country notorious for its human rights violations”. Clarification sought Iran called on Britain to provide clarification and consular access after police arrested seven Iranian nationals on suspicion of “terrorism offences”. Britain’s Interior Minister Yvette Cooper said the arrests of the seven and another person came amid heightened concerns about Iranian activities. The Times newspaper reported that the arrests followed an alleged plot to target the Israeli embassy in London, but officials have not commented. In a post on X, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said he was “disturbed” to learn of the arrests. “If credible allegations of misconduct are established, Iran stands ready to assist investigations,” he said, urging Britain to “ensure respect for our citizens’ rights and afford them due process”. Model testifies A Polish model testified yesterday against fallen film mogul Harvey Weinstein in his retrial on sex assault charges, the first time the woman claiming the former Miramax boss forced oral sex on her has been heard in criminal court. Kaja Sokola, 39, alleges Weinstein sexually assaulted her in spring 2006 in a Manhattan hotel, claims the former cinema scion denies. While the other accusers in the New York case — one-time production assistant Miriam Haley and then-aspiring actress Jessica Mann — testified at Weinstein’s original trial, Sokola is being heard for the first time. Weinstein’s 2020 convictions on charges relating to Haley and Mann were overturned last year by the New York Court of Appeals, which ruled the way witnesses were handled in the original trial was unlawful.
