A police officer is due in court next month charged with excess breath alcohol causing death. About two weeks ago, cyclist David Lane, 69, died after a crash in Auckland’s Flat Bush. The crash also saw several parked cars on Stancombe Rd damaged. The officer was off duty at the time of the crash but was stood down and the incident was referred to the IPCA

Church fights COVID rules

A group of Christian ministers is appealing a High Court ruling in favour of lockdown restrictions for churches. The court decided restrictions on people gathering for religious purposes and in churches during COVID-19 outbreaks was justified. Free To Be Church spokesman Reverend Logan Hagoort said the goal was to ensure separation of Church and state was protected, and bureaucratic mechanisms don’t over-reach.

Ramraids in Christchurch

There were two ramraids in Christchurch overnight Thursday. Police were called to Sues Takeaway and Convenience Store in the suburb of Yaldhurst just before 1am. The person responsible had left the scene and had not been found yesterday. Meanwhile, a man was arrested after smashing through two glass doors to access a high-end camera store on Papanui Rd in the suburb of Merivale. A 33-year-old man will face court on charges of burglary and possession of cannabis.

MP blasts parole policy

A National MP says Corrections’ notification policy for parole is absurd. The department is conducting a review after a Christchurch woman was murdered in her home by convicted rapist Joseph Brider. Juliana Herrera, 37 was unaware 35-year-old Brider — who had just moved in next door — was on parole for a violent crime.
