Paxton impeached Texas’ Republican-led House of Representatives impeached state Attorney General Ken Paxton on Saturday on articles including bribery and abuse of public trust, a sudden, historic rebuke of a GOP official who rose to be a star of the conservative legal movement despite years of scandal and alleged crimes. It triggers Paxton’s immediate suspension from office pending the outcome of a trial in the state Senate and empowers Republican Governor Greg Abbott to appoint someone else as Texas’ top lawyer in the interim. It makes Paxton, 60, only the third sitting official in Texas’ nearly 200-year history to have been impeached

Serbian protests Huge crowds of anti-government protesters yesterday encircled the Serbian state television building in downtown Belgrade, demanding autocratic President Aleksandar Vucic eases his tight grip on the mainstream media and allow alternative voices. Tens of thousands of opposition supporters, some urging Vucic’s resignation, streamed into the streets a day after the president’s followers staged an equally big rally in the capital. Most of his supporters were bused into the capital from all over Serbia and some neighbouring states. Held for the fourth time since the early May shootings that killed 18 and wounded 20, the opposition-led protests appear to be shaping up into the biggest revolt against Vucic’s autocratic rule during his over 10 years in power.
