All ages celebrate the joy of reading

Former farmer and rural veterinary technician trainee Teresa Walters, of Milton, said she decided to join the adults’ challenge when she signed up children Steven and Leah for the children’s competition

Mrs Walters recommended Do No Harm by Christina McDonald as her favourite book from the selection she read over the challenge period of December 1 to January 31.

The Summer Reading Challenge is a library tradition aimed at encouraging the well-researched benefits of reading and literacy, particularly in children, but open to all ages.

Adult entrants kept a record of checked-out books and children received a list of fun activities to occupy the holiday weeks, including library visits and plenty of storytimes.

All entrants went into the prize draw.

Club spokeswoman Donna Buxton said Rotary had been a sponsor for the past two years.

‘‘Literacy is one of Rotary’s six key areas of community focus and that’s been particularly relevant since the pandemic. Reading gives us somewhere to go when we have to stay where we are,’’ Mrs Buxton said...
