All hands to pumps for return of event

The 147th annual show will fill the park-like grounds with animals, produce, children’s artwork, competitions, and entertainment throughout the day

There is plenty of car parking space for visitors and shady trees where everyone can enjoy a picnic.

A&P association president Stephanie McCullough is delighted the show is back after COVID-19 forced it to be called off in recent times.

She believes the show is a great way of connecting urban people with what is happening in the rural sector.

The showgrounds are easily accessible alongside State Highway1, and because they are so well fenced they provide a safe place where people can relax. A new fence installed along the polo field next to the railway line improves the amenities further.

The committee has put in a lot of volunteer hours to upgrade the showgrounds and make sure all is ready for the big day, Mrs McCullough said.

The five people who worked on the polo field fence had ages that totalled up to 352 — two were in their 80s.

She hoped the other projects still to be tackled would be completed in time for the 150th show.

‘‘Once you start, it enthuses people.

‘‘We’re honouring the people of the past and making it easier for the future.’’

This year’s show features several new attractions. A ute muster sponsored by Caroline Mitsubishi should appeal to a wide range of people, as will the FMX (freestyle motorcycles) that will be involved in three performances during the day.

Charlotte Talbot, who became a children’s songwriter and entertainer during the COVID lockdowns, will present a half-hour show from about 11.30am. She has collaborated with pupils at Temuka Primary School on a song about litter on rural roads.

Popular local singer Cam Scott will also perform live.
