Anglers excited for new season

Smaller water bodies that are closed over winter to protect spawning trout and salmon will be open once again to fishing

"The excitement among anglers is not only due to being able to return to their favourite fishing spots, but also due to the great fishing they'll encounter," West Coast Fish and Game officer Baylee Kersten said.

"Large trout are often cunning but given the absence of fishing pressure over winter, the odds are tipped in the angler's favour.

"The recent warm weather we have been experiencing has had plenty of anglers out making use of our fisheries that remain open year-round. Their reports have been positive, with many having success fishing the lower reaches of our rivers - always a productive spot in spring.

"The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) has forecast the West Coast is likely to have a warm spring with reduced rainfall. With low water temperatures sometimes limiting trout activity in the early season, the favourable weather will improve the fishing during October."
