Ashleigh heads to final

Waimakariri Young Farmers’ Club (YFC) member Ashleigh Foley qualified for the final after placing second in the Tasman North district contest held at the Amuri Showgrounds on Saturday, October 30.

A former Tasman region chairperson, Ms Foley works as a seed representative for PGG Wrightson.

She will be lining up against seven other finalists in Tasman regional final being held at Lincoln on February 19.

Up for grabs will be a place in the grand final being held in Whangarei in July.

In all, 37 competitors battled it out over two district contests, with the Tasman South competition held at the Leeston Showgrounds on October 16.

Regional final convenor Steph Kelly is looking forward to focusing on making practical skills and challenges a big part of the regional final.

‘‘My overall goal for the Tasman regional final is to put on a great practical day and evening show to bring the community together and get people off farm,’’ she says.

‘‘It is so important to get time off farm, especially with the adverse weather we’ve had down here.’’

With an passionate committee behind her, Ms Kelly says she hopes to gain confidence in leading a team and getting to know more people across the rural sector.

New Zealand Young Farmers chief executive Lynda Coppersmith says the competition keeps improving despite the challenges thrown at it by Covid-19.
