Golden Horse principal Charlie Rudd paid credit to the amateur boxers who had put themselves forward to fight

It was a huge commitment, especially given some of them had prepared for an earlier event that was postponed due to COVID-19.

Rudd said the initial Taitoko Takeover held last year was a sellout with more than 900 tickets sold and was a success.

Early indications were there would be a similar crowd tomorrow night for Taitoko Takeover II.

Rudd had initially started a boxing gym in Levin three years ago for people of all ages to gain fitness.

The idea of staging a boxing event happened organically as people wanted an opportunity to challenge themselves in the ring in a safe environment.

The event had the backing of Boxing New Zealand which would provide umpires. There was a strong emphasis on safety and towels would be thrown in the ring at the first hint of a boxer struggling.
