"The event brings a lot of people into the district for the weekend," Buller Board Riders secretary and spokesman Pana Leontiadu said.

The classic is one of four in the South Island Surfing Association circuit for the 2022-23 season. This year, it was also combined with the under-18 Groms Competition which was held on the Friday along with the open, over-30s, longboards all in men's and women's divisions, and over-45 men's during the weekend. No women had yet entered that division.

"This year we were approached by Buller Electricity about offering equal prizemoney for both the men's and women's events. They also made it happen and provided the $1000 for the open men and women winners."...
