The hundreds of pupils were shown the correct way to approach a dog, how to find out if their cycle helmets were safe and learn how to ride safely, undertake CPR, exit a building full of smoke, build a shelter in the bush and what to do near railway tracks, as well as firearm safety. They could also experience an earthquake.

Public district health nurse Raewyn Snell said Clued Up Kids was an annual event run by the nurses and supported by Southland District health Board, Rotary Balclutha and Blue Light.

“Without their help we couldn’t help to educate children in the district on a wide variety of home and environmental safety issues.

“We look at how to recognise safety issues and how to keep themselves safe inside and outside,” she said.

The annual event has been held for more than seven years and last Wednesday there were 10 stations for the schools to work around, each being completed in 12 minutes under the guidance of staff from NZ Police, Fenz, CDC, LandSAR, Sport Otago and Emergency Management Otago.
