Firefighters step up fundraising

Superhero Friday will raise funds for the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge in Auckland

The treadmill fundraiser will be held at Carve Carve Fitness Winton, starting at 7am on Friday, April 28, and finishing at 11am the next day.

Volunteer firefighters Steve Turton and Guy Johnstone are back for the challenge after the duo took part in the first event held last year.

They were both excited to welcome four more firefighters on board this year.

‘‘Seeing the support which we received last year, that encouraged us to do it again, and the kids really enjoyed Superhero Friday.

‘‘So it is exciting to have more people and treadmills involved,’’ Mr Johnstone said.

It was a small way they could help out families who suffered from leukaemia, Mr Turton said.

‘‘The pain or hurt we will go through is nothing compared to the people who are dealing with leukaemia so this is us doing our bit.’’

As well as the fundraiser, there would be an extra treadmill for community members and the person with the highest recorded steps would win a prize, Mr Turton said.

New to the 28-hour challenge, volunteer firefighters Paul Sullivan and Pete Wilkinson said they were looking forward to it.
