Fishing season a chance to catch a meal, chill out

‘‘People need to look after their wellbeing as living costs reach all-time highs, and unwind outdoors with friends and family,’’ Otago Fish & Game officer Bruce Quirey said

“Fortunately, Otago anglers itching to catch trout that have been undisturbed in closed waters for the past four months do not have to travel far to find good freshwater fishing.’’

Good populations of brown and rainbow trout and perch are reported in the lower Clutha River, and tributaries such as the Pomahaka and Waipahi — rested over winter — look in good shape as snow thaws in the headwaters.

In coastal reaches, anglers are watching large sea-run brown trout, chasing bait fish in estuaries...
