Foodbank cooks do more with little SuperGrans

When the box of ingredients arrives from the Dunedin Night Shelter, it is all hands on deck to convert these into hearty, healthy meals before lunchtime

‘‘We never know what we’re gonna get,’’ regular volunteer George Taitua said.

‘‘This year we’ve had kingfish, venison mince, 14 fresh chickens as well as an impressive range of veges and dried ingredients.’’

The group has developed a few go-to recipes and learned a lot about cooking in the process.

Bolognaise, chicken chow mein, sweet and sour fish, cottage pie and the inevitable macaroni cheese have become firm favourites.

‘‘Volunteers from a variety of cultures all bring different skills to the group,’’ SuperGrans manager Sandy McKay said.

‘‘We are incredibly lucky.’’
