Guest artist: ‘Each piece tells a story’

The Christchurch-based artist was showing her work in Dunedin when she was approached by Riversdale Arts committee members to be their guest artist

Mrs Norton, who hand-stitches jewellery on to velvet that is then framed with UltraVue non-reflective glass, said she is excited to be part of the exhibition.

“I am honoured to be the guest artist at this year’s event,” Mrs Norton said.

“It’s still very surreal for me. Sometimes I need to pinch myself at the realisation that I am an artist.”

It will be the first time her work has featured at the exhibition.

Mrs Norton said her passion for vintage jewellery began when she was a child, but it was not until recently she combined it with her art.

“I have collected jewellery since I was 3 years old as a hobby and for comfort and continued doing it as I grew up.

‘‘It wasn’t until several years ago that I started creating art pieces with the jewellery,” she said.

Collecting the jewellery is one of her favourite parts of the creative process.

“I source jewellery from many different places and I’m always fascinated by the stories behind the pieces I collect.
