Glenmark-Cheviot v Waihora

Stung by last week’s disappointing loss to Celtic, Glenmark-Cheviot struck back decisively accounting for previously unbeaten Waihora 41 -10.

Glenmark-Cheviot was bursting with energy, and looking for opportunities.

It was rewarded with its 4-try bonus point after only 30 minutes.

A resurgent Waihora bounced back either side of half-time with two well worked tries, but Glenmark-Cheviot regained its composure and fluency midway through the second-half, to score another three tries in the final quarter.

In the forwards, Hayden O’Donnell and George Fox, both celebrated their 50th games for the club with strong performances, while backs Max Murray and Caleb Beck relished the quick ball they were presented with and were swift to take their opportunities.

Glenmark-Cheviot 41 (Angus Gibb, Jacob Vincent, George Fox, William Baker, Matt Holmes, Max Murray and Matthew Jensen tries, Corrigan Harnett 3 conversions) beat Waihora 10.

Hurunui v Celtic

Hurunui is specialising in nail-biting finishes this season, winning 22-20 against Celtic at Culverden. It took an early 3-0 lead, but Celtic got its game together and started to find holes in the Hurunui defence.

It used the width of the field to good effect, utilising the size and pace it had on both wings, but it was a mid-field break by the No 8 that set up the first of two tries to second five Isireli Maserini. The lead was short-lived as hooker Ben Funnell, and winger Andrew Murdoch, both scored to give Hurunui a 15-10 half-time lead.

Celtic scored two tries wide out in the first 10 minutes of the second half to establish a 15-20 lead, and dominated territory for most of the rest of the match, but was unable to register any further points.

As the match entered injury time, Hurunui worked its way deep into the Celtic half after a quick tap from a free kick. Hurunui’s forwards took control for the last three minutes and veteran, Cale Dobby secured the ball from a ruck and scored under the posts. Digby Heard converted.

In the backs Simon Smith stood out for Hurunui while lock Flynn Crean and flanker Louie Bethell toiled tirelessly up front.

Hurunui 22 (Ben Funnell, Andrew Murdoch, Cale Dobby tries, Digby Heard one penalty and two conversions) beat Celtic 20.
