National Office and branch activities.

Ten members of the NZIIA Standing Committee and the director met with Parliament's Select Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (FADTC) chair, John Hayes ME and the full committee membership on 20 May 2010. Following the meeting there has been an exchange of correspondence confirming agreement between the FADTC and the NZIIA on a number of practical measures that could provide a basis for joint actions to consolidate the future relationship.

On 13 June a roundtable was held with Senator David Coltart, Zimbabwe's Minister of Education, on the topic 'Zimbabwe's On-going Crisis: Is There a Way Forward?'.

On 28 June the NZIIA and the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre joined to stage a panel discussion on 'China's Rise: Implications for Global and Regional Governance' attended by 105 people. Moderated by Professor Rob Rabel, the panel featured Professor David Shambaugh (Elliot School of International Affairs, George Washington University), Professor Shen Dingli (Institute of International Relations, Fudan University), Professor Sam Zhao (Josef Korbd School of International Studies, University of Denver), and Professor Jin Canrong (School of International Relations, Renmin University of China).

On 21 July Dr Anna Gwiazda, a lecturer at Trinity College, Dublin, addressed a meeting at Victoria University of Wellington on 'The Issues and the Outcome of the Recent Presidential Election in Poland: What it Means for Poland and Europe'.

On 27 July J.W Adams, the World Bank's Vice President for the East Asia and Pacific Region, addressed a working lunch in Wellington on 'Asia-Pacific After the Financial Crisis'.

On 29 July a seminar was conducted in association with the Centre for Strategic Studies with Professor Hugh White (Visiting Fellow at the Lowy Institute for International Policy and Professor of Strategic Studies at the Australian National University) on 'New Zealand's Defence White Paper and the Future of Asia'.

The Prime Minister Rt Hon John Key gave an address 'New Zealand in the World' on 29 August. (The edited text of his remarks is to be found elsewhere in this issue.)
