Institute notes: the National Council meeting.

The Annual Dinner of the NZIIA was held on Thursday 16 June at the Wellington Club, with 105 present. The Governor of the Reserve Bank, Dr Alan Bollard, was the guest of honour. He gave an entertaining and informative presentation about New Zealand-born economist Alban Phillips, who invented the Phillips curve, which indicated the relationship between inflation and unemployment.

At the National Council meeting on 17 June, Sir Kenneth Keith was re-elected as President of the NZIIA. Bruce Brown was confirmed as Vice President, and the other office holders were also all re-elected. A full list of office holders is provided below.

Branch delegates reported on activities in their various branches: Dr Jian Yang on Auckland, Dr Ron Smith on Hamilton, Ken Aldred on Napier, Geoff Watson on Palmerston North, Sue Perry on Wairarapa, Gerald McGhie on Wellington, Professor David McIntyre on Christchurch and Brian Foley on Timaru.

Reports were received from the Managing Editor of the NZIR, Ian McGibbon, and Chairman of the Research Committee Rod Alley. The former pointed to a successful year, with the finances of the magazine in reasonable shape, despite a continuing lack of advertising. Dr Alley outlined a number of publishing ventures during the year, and noted that good progress was being made with the fourth volume of New Zealand in Worm Affairs. He also noted the NZIIA's involvement in the publication of Southeast Asia and New Zealand, which was due to be launched on 20 June.

An amended constitution was approved. Some discussion of the structure of the NZBA followed, including of the role of honorary vice-presidents.

The Council noted the honours received by two of its members: Judge A. Satyanand was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen's Birthday honours list and Gerald McGhie a Companion of...
