The insurance premium budget was one of two unbudgeted expenditure applications at the council’s first meeting of 2023 yesterday

Council staff applied for a total of $145,000 in unbudgeted expenditure.

Council project accountant Emma Strong said council had budgeted for $678,000 to cover its annual insurance premiums but premium increases on its public indemnity/public liability insurance had increased its bill to $791,000.

‘‘Insurers were experiencing an increase in claim severity and frequency which had led to the indemnity/liability insurance premium increases.’’

Councillor Jaspreet Bopari questioned the large increase in premiums.

Council chief financial officer Anne Robson explained there had been no significant changes to the council’s insurance policies in the past year, but property revaluations and the inclusion of the newly opened Te Anau wastewater plant had also had an affect on the increased premiums.
