Lead removal to help kea

Minister of Conservation Kiri Allan said the investment was through the Jobs for Nature programme.

"Lead poisoning is a serious threat to this charismatic and cheeky mountain parrot. Unfortunately it is attracted to the sweet tasting but toxic metal, commonly used in building materials prior to the 1990s, and the effects can be devastating," she said.

"The project is being spearheaded by the Kea Conservation Trust. Government funding of $950,000 will allow the Trust to take on eight people from areas most affected by the COVID-related downturn in tourism, who will be trained to work at heights and in roofing maintenance."
