Lightning strike on Hokitika rain radar

Upon checking the radar following last Monday's outage, staff found that the lightning had damaged the fibreglass dome on the radar tower, the wall of the radar equipment building, and electronic radar equipment

Additional parts were required for repair.

The Westland radar is remote, sitting 360m above sea level, roughly 10km east of Hokitika. It is one of 10 radars in the national network which, along with 218 automatic weather stations, are maintained by technicians.
