Cooking Sichuan dumplings is Charley McDonald’s remedy to curing homesickness.

‘‘It’s a very special [dish]. If you’re homesick you eat dumplings.’’

She shifted from Lanzhou to Wyndham in November last year with partner Chase.

When she was growing up, it was a family tradition to make dumplings at Chinese New Year’s eve, she said.

‘‘Normally we would put a coin inside a dumpling and after it’s cooked we serve everybody and whoever has the coin, it means you will have good luck for the whole year.’’

At a young age she was taught by her mother how to make dumplings.

‘‘When I was little I would sit there and [fill them] but I didn’t make it myself until I was in high school.’’

In her household, dumplings always stood for love and good wishes and being together with family, she said.

‘‘Even when you might have an unhappy moment with your family, you put all your love, wishes ... understanding words into the dumplings.

‘‘After you have dumplings all the bad things and memories are gone and you’re left with happiness and best wishes.’’
