Meet Teviot Valley candidates

We asked candidates three questions

1. Why are you standing for council or community board?

2. Housing affordability and availability is a hot topic in the region. What role does local government have to play in improving this issue in the region?

3. What do you see as the key issue facing the region?

Only three candidates from the Teviot Valley responded, and no-one from the Maniototo Ward, where all were elected unopposed.

Standing for: Teviot Valley Ward Councillor

1. I want to be responsive to local conditions, particularly what we need to do to mitigate climate change risks. I want to ensure we have vibrant communities to support the local economy and visitors alike. I want to ensure we protect our district for future generations. I want to ensure our community has essential assets, so I am chairing the Roxburgh swimming pool redevelopment, so our children have a safe place to swim.

2. Seek opportunities to collaborate, find funding from the government or external sources, and work with Central Otago Affordable Housing Trust to increase the number of affordable houses in our district. Support the council in providing a range of affordable section sizes and implement the work done in the spatial plans that allows for this.

3. The key issue I see currently is worker shortage. A thriving economy supports the whole community; we need workers to fill shortages across many sectors.

Focus on attracting more people to call Central Otago their home by showcasing the many attributes Central Otago offers as a place to live, work, play and raise a family. Encourage initiatives such as the Central Mahi regional recruitment drive and programmes such as the Teviot Valley Community Hub to support orchardists.
