New World wrongfully opened on Good Friday two years running

The two supermarkets have been fined in the Christchurch District Court for the ‘‘blatant violation’’ of the Shop Trading Hours Act 1990 after they opened their doors to trade on Good Friday in 2021 and 2022

By law, shops must be closed on Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and until 1pm on Anzac Day unless exempt.

The supermarkets, which are locally owned and operated, are both part of Foodstuffs South Island co-operative.

Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) regional manager labour inspectorate Loua Ward said despite the two stores and FoodStuffs South Island chief executive being sent warning letters in early April 2022, the owner/operators wilfully chose to open illegally on Good Friday.
