Pupils take to the track

The race took place in the Mitre 10 car park where pupils had to complete four laps of the track

The team with the fastest combined time was the winner.

The $1500 prize money was donated by Mitre 10 and Hyundai.

Rally driver Hayden Paddon was there to support the event.

‘‘It’s cool to come back to where it all started and it’s good to host events like this. You never know — one of these kids out there may be the next rally driver.’’

People were able to get photos with Paddon and his car while enjoying a sausage sizzle.

‘‘It’s nice to be able to bring the car out as it’s not often that kids get to see a car like this,’’ Paddon said.

The schools built and decorated their own carts and teams of two filled the roles of driver and pusher.

Eight primary schools competed, and first place won $500, second and third place each got $250, fourth place received $150 and fifth to eighth places each received $100.

Beaconsfield School won the prize for the best-decorated cart.

Before the race Highfield Primary School team members Ryan Clark and Hayley Koster said they were excited and were ‘‘aiming for the top three’’.

They just missed out on the top three, placing fourth.
