Southern hit the ground running, completely dominating the early exchanges by claiming all the early possession and unleashing a series of assaults on the Saracens’ line through its big, hard-running forwards

But it was a chip and collect from Southern’s nifty number 10, Will Green that gave the visitors the early lead.

It seemed certain that Saracens was going to have a very hard day at the office.

But totally contrary to those early expectations, Saracens quickly pulled its game together and soon stamped its authority on the match.

By half-time it had locked away its four-try bonus point, and had established a 28-14 lead which at no stage was seriously threatened.

Saracens scored another three second-half tries and all seven were converted by Saracens’ sharp-shooter, Ricky Allin, whose educated boot in general play also ensured that his team played most of the match in the opponent’s half.

Saracens’ success was based on a spirited effort by their pack, all of whom produced sterling efforts.

They were well led by the inspiring Josh Maynard and four of the pack got on the scorecard.

Live-wire flanker, Brett Hancox was the first when he dotted down after concerted pressure from the Saracens forwards, followed soon after by impressive hooker, Connor Higgins whose try was a well-earned reward for a fine all-round effort.

Saracens hardest-working forward was lanky lock, Alex Kennedy, who dotted down twice in the first half.

He was always a factor at lineout time, as a jumper or lifter, and if he was not one of those involved in setting up the ruck or maul, he invariably positioned himself to receive the pass from the halfback.

He never failed to make the advantage line, and on occasions when he broke the line he showed remarkable speed for a big man.

Much of Saracens’ game plan was based around him.

Another significant contribution came from Rawiri Karena, a rugged prop who showed he will be a valuable acquisition, scoring twice in the second half.

It was not until deep in injury time that a back, winger Ollie Bithray, got on to the scoresheet.

This victory has put Saracens in a strong position. But its been here before early in the season.

It needs to cement its position at the top of the table with consistent performances.

Scoreboard: Saracens 49 (Brett Hancox, Connor Higgins, Alex Kennedy (2), Rawiri Karena (2), Ollie Bithray) tries, beat Southern 19.
