Science passion leads to scholarship

It will enable her to attend the 2023 University of Otago Advanced School Sciences Academy for Year 13 students. The scholarship pays all travel, accommodation and fees to attend two, one-week block courses at the Otago University campus in Dunedin. There are also virtual online sessions held throughout the year

Director of the Dodd-Walls Centre, David Hutchinson, said the academy was a great opportunity for budding scientists to rub shoulders with their peers and have a first look at the sciences at tertiary level.

"These scholarships are all about opening young people's eyes to what study and future careers are available to them in New Zealand," he said.

It was an especially good way for students from smaller towns to experience university life and to meet other people passionate about science.

To be awarded the scholarship, Louella was required to write an essay about science in the 21st Century.

"I wrote about Covid and vaccines, scientists and how science has evolved over time," she said.
