Season opening perfect time to net young anglers

As the new season opening coincides with the start of school holidays, Central South Island Fish & Game is encouraging experienced anglers to make the time to teach a young person how to fish

October is traditionally a good month to fish local waterways for trout, salmon, perch and tench as water levels remain elevated with spring rainfall and snowmelt.

Fish & game officer Rhys Adams said there had been four changes to the regulation guide that anglers needed to be aware of this season.

They were:

■The (upper) Ohau River flowing between Lakes Ohau and Ruataniwha, Twizel, has been designated a controlled fishery for October (in addition to September). This means only anglers who entered the recently held ballots and won a controlled period licence can fish the Ohau River on specified dates during October.

■Partial closure of Lake Heron to fishing in April 2023. Harrisons Bight of Lake Heron is closed to all sports fishing in April to avoid the catch and disturbance of sea-run salmon that congregate in the lake prior to spawning.

■Boat mooring restriction removed at Lake Emma. Anglers are now permitted to fish from unmoored boats on the lake.
