Stern reminder to cover up, slip, slap, slop

An estimated 25% of farmers have been treated for melanoma and other types of skin cancer.

That’s why Federated Farmers is warning them to cover up and get regular checks.

Mid Canterbury president David Clark said he didn’t have a family history of skin cancer, but booked in for a check with MoleMap every year.

Farmers worked outside and skin cancer was common in their profession, so he always wore a hat and put sunscreen on, he said.

‘‘I have lost friends with melanoma — it’s cruel and it’s quick.’’

Regular skin checks were a good way of noting slow, progressive changes in the skin, which could be easily overlooked, Mr Clark said.

Checks also allowed for early intervention and treatment.

Also on the minds of farmers is the need for more sunshine hours to kick-start paddocks.
