Three Waters: ‘At least we have certainty’

Four new entities will oversee the operation of New Zealand’s water infrastructure, Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta said last week . Southland will be part of an entity covering the majority of the South Island.

Gore District Mayor Tracy Hicks said the decision came as no surprise.

‘‘While it’s not what we petitioned for, at least we have certainty.

‘‘The need for reform has been evident for quite some time.’’

The Gore District needs more than $300 million of investment in water infrastructure over the next 30 years, he said.

‘‘Being part of a larger group will help.’’

However, there are concerns around accountability, Mr Hicks said.

Gore District residents have come to expect a high-quality service, he said.
