Toxic algal blooms in rivers pose risk for swimmers, pets

Like everyone I’ve been enjoying kicking back over the summer holiday period, catching up with people, and catching up on a few jobs round the garden

I’ve really enjoyed the break after an intense 2022, but things are about to gear up again.

One matter has been worrying me, though, and that is the safety of swimming in the Waikanae and Otaki rivers.

Last week GWRC put an amber alert for toxic algae after algal blooms were found in both rivers.

Please take these alerts seriously as toxic algae can kill dogs and make people sick.

As a dog owner, and a parent, I certainly wouldn’t be putting either at risk, and check for toxic algae before entering either river. Dogs and children should be kept out of the water until further notice.

Toxic algal mats grow on rocks in the riverbed and form leathery dark green or black mats, which can break off and accumulate on the riverbank.

As detached algal mats dry out, they become light brown and emit a distinctive musty odour that attracts dogs.
