Word spreads on joys of trail running

Co-organiser and Timaru resident Alice Brice said 28 people joined them on Sunday for the first of many trail runs

Mrs Brice said the running group was created after she started working at Frontrunner Timaru.

‘‘Kirsty Shefford is my workmate and a beginner runner. I was telling her about how good trail runs are, and we decided to invite anyone that wanted to join us to come along.’’

As they were both training for Race Tekapo, the pair had decided to host a trail run once a month leading up to the race in September, Mrs Brice said.

‘‘I still have so many other trails to show Kirsty — and our new friends — that we might have to continue until the end of the year.’’

The standouts were ‘‘the laughter from slopping around in the mud, conversations with new and old friends and the joy of discovering a new trail’’.

Some locals didn’t know the trail existed, some hadn’t run in years, while others were runners but new to trails, Mrs Brice said.

She did want to clarify to any potential participants they had permission to walk.

‘‘On trails it is acceptable to walk, especially the hills. It is totally acceptable to stop for photos and snacks, and when you go with friends the conversations are therapeutic.’’

She felt it was a ‘‘cheap counselling session’’.

‘‘The places you visit, the views you see and getting away from the hustle and bustle of the streets is euphoric.’’

While the runners were predominantly women, she hoped men would realise they are invited ,too.

‘‘We welcome hikers as well.’’

Runners and hikers alike needed to be prepared for ‘‘mud, cold and fun’’.
