It was reported to police about 6.45pm that a man with a knife was attempting to steal vehicles near the hospital

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy, of Waitaki, said the offender pulled the woman out of her vehicle, and held her at knifepoint, before attempting to leave in her car. When it failed to start, he went on to steal another woman’s vehicle and fled the scene.

He was stopped by police in Thames St soon after and taken into custody without incident.

Snr Sgt McCoy said the 23-year-old man had no fixed address in the South Island.

‘‘He had come down to the South Island from the North Island in the last two weeks,’’ he said.
