Last week, we spent our two hours walking around the area to the east of Rainbow Point. Taupō at this time of year has many sparkling days but last Wednesday was exceptionally fine

Looking across the lake, the buildings behind Acacia Bay could be seen with extreme clarity and it was possible to pick out every detail of the mountains to the south. The breeze was fresh however, which meant it was not too warm, so taken all it was a perfect day for a walk.

In the gardens of the well established properties in this area sun flowers were in full bloom with their wonderful yellow faces swaying on long stalks which reached up to two metres or more.

We passed through the echoing tunnel under Lake Terrace into the developing residential areas which run about a kilometre or so along the north side of the main road. It is good that the sections and the houses are all of different sizes and shapes as this lends so much character to the new areas.

Some of our number have lived all their lives in Taupō and had stories of how this area used to be. It is still within living memory that the eastern edge of the town was somewhere around Rifle Range Rd. It is remarkable that even with such rapid expansion, Taupō was able to be officially designated the most beautiful large town in the country. It shows the planners must have got something right.

Finally, our 25 or so Wednesday walkers made our way down to the lake and along the shore back to Rainbow Point climbing up and down the various inland ridges to gain full benefit from the exercise. It was a great way to see the eastern edge of our town in full bloom on the second day of Autumn.

Taupō Bowling Club

There should be no doubts about the future strength of women’s bowls at the Harcourt’s Taupō Bowling Club after the skills that emerged from the women’s junior club championships at the weekend.

Firstly, Saturday’s junior women’s championship singles saw the honours being taken out by a skilled Maureen Blackburn who finished with three wins in a round robin that featured some amazing bowls. Maureen went through unbeaten.

Then, on Sunday it took three straight matches to decide the women’s junior pairs title after Maureen Blackburn (sk) /Kirste Byloo won the first game and opponents Jill Lloyd (sk)/Patrice Senior won the second leading to a third match play-off to decide the championship honours.

In yet another tight match, that entertained the small gallery of spectators, Jill Lloyd/Patrice Senior proved to be the stayers...
