Head girl wins Zonta award

Zonta Club of Oamaru president Rowena Hutton said the scholarship is part of the International Young Women in Public Affairs Award Programme. It encourages participation through commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements, and dedication to empowering women through service and advocacy

Applications were invited from East Otago High School, Waitaki Girls’ High School, and St Kevin’s College.

‘‘The interview panel said the standard was high and the decision a challenge, with the applicants being close to each other with their presentation and attributes,’’ Mrs Hutton said.

Sophie won $1000 and the two runners-up received vouchers from Zonta.

‘‘Sophie has been head girl for 2022 and snippets from her letters of recommendation said Sophie is an outstanding young woman and an excellent ambassador of all we aspire to at Waitaki Girls’ High,’’ Mrs Hutton said.
