Hemmingsen, 73, was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for his work as a member of the Levin Waiopehu Lions Club since first joining the organisation in 1993

A stand-out contribution was his work in founding the Kan Tabs movement which in the last 20 years had raised more than $250,000 for Kidney Kids, assisting children with kidney diseases with their social needs while receiving dialysis treatment.
