Hemmingsen, 73, was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for his work as a member of the Levin Waiopehu Lions Club since first joining the organisation in 1993

A stand-out contribution was his work in founding the Kan Tabs movement which in the last 20 years had raised more than $250,000 for Kidney Kids, assisting children with kidney diseases with their social needs while receiving dialysis treatment.

Kan Tabs started when Hemmingsen was principal of Koputaroa School in the late 1990s. It began by collecting the aluminium tabs off beer and soft drink cans and recycling them for money. The movement later expanded to...
