Market day creates a special vibe in High St

The day dawned overcast with a gentle northerly wind but almost as if the 11am earthquake which rattled a few nerves also woke up the weather gods, the sun came out and added just that touch more to the already special vibe on Dannevirke’s High St.

There were 40 stalls registered, many from the Hawke’s Bay, and only two failed to come. One owner said she had ordered goods for the Hawke’s Bay Show which was cancelled and she was thrilled to have the opportunity to sell in Dannevirke, reporting “a busy trade”.

High St was very crowded with through traffic heading to the Hawke’s Bay and stopping to participate in the market if the driver could find a park.

The footpaths were equally busy, lots of families coming out to browse and buy, all wearing masks and keeping their metre distancing, a point noted by Wairarapa MP Kieren McAnulty who always visits on market day.

He congratulated Pat Walshe and his community board for persisting, saying if everyone complied with the restrictions like this...
