SPCA brings Treat Week to Coast

Treat Week is a week-long extravaganza where every dollar raised helps SPCA rehabilitate animals to give them a second chance at life

The SPCA is the only charity with the power to protect all animals including prosecuting people under the Animal Welfare Act 1999.

However, the SPCA only receives $2.5 million a year from the Government - which funds the inspectorate only, itself costing more than $12 million annually.

All centres are funded by donations from generous members of the public, and those funds are used to care for, rehabilitate and rehoming animals in its care. The SPCA also uses its position to educate and engage with communities, and rehabilitate, reunite and rehome animals in its care.

While those animals are waiting for that right home, they need fed, dosed and sheltered One special pooch looking for the right 'forever home' is Narla, an energetic and friendly girl with a sleek chestnut coat.

Melissa Roper, canine co-ordinator for the Greymouth SPCA, says: "Narla came to the SPCA in Christchurch fourteen months ago".

"She was then aged 2 and had a litter of puppies. She has come here to see if the right person is waiting on the Coast.

"She absolutely loves playing in water and going to the beach, she is a real sweetheart.
