Katikati Indoor Bowls Club night on July 21 saw the completion of the Champion Triples with three teams remaining with one life each. In the first round Mary Coles team had the bye, which left Neal Mikklesen’s team to play Wayne Gamble’s team. Wayne’s team lost their last life which gave the win to Neal’s team who then played Mary’s team. The result was Mary Cole’s team of Betty Sugden and Helen Bowick were the winners and will contest the main event representing the club in Champion of Champions Association Triples fixture in Tauranga at a later date. Neal Mikklesen’s team of Peter Bowles and Neville Henderson as runner up will contest the plate event at the same fixture.

Meanwhile the remaining club members played three games of seven ends. Peter Billinghurst’s team of Colin Nickel, Elsie Gribben and Hazel Johnstone were night winners with three wins, 14 ends and 26 points. Barrie Price’s team of Kasey Marlow and Kim Lees was runner up with two wins, 12 ends and 17 points.

FAIRVIEW MEN’S 18 HOLE

It has been a busy catch-up period over the last two weeks for the Men’s 18 Hole golf group with rain delayed matches being completed in the various club Competitions.

On Monday July 12, the mid-week Handicap Matchplay trophy final was played over 18 holes and resulted in a win for Nigel Fannin over Donald Stewart.

In the Handicap Matchplay championships, Phillip Turrall has had a busy time playing two matches in as many days and moving into the semifinal with victories over Dave McLeod and Graeme Thompson respectively. In the remaining quarter finals of the same competition Warren Fletcher beat Allan Thomson: Ian Howells beat Tim Bridgeman and Donald Munro, beat Donald Stewart. The semi-final lineup will now be Ian to play Warren with Phillip to play Donald.

In the Top Dog pairs competition, Brian McMurray and Tiki Bluegum secured their place in the final after their win on the 18th over Graeme Thompson and Bill Jopling. Brian and Tiki now play Fred Okkerse and Donald Munro, the winners earn the bragging rights to be called ‘Top Dogs’.

Wednesday, July 14 was round three of four, in the mid-week John Stott Vets Cup with the best three scores to count from the four round competition. On a fine day with good course conditions a field of 32 played a stableford round off the white tees. The winner, scoring a superb 44 points was Bob Willetts; Donald Munro pipped Vladimir Sorokin for second place on countback with both players scoring 39 points.
