‘‘In addition, they can provide excellent opportunities for younger hunters to get out and bag a few birds,’’ he says.

The summer paradise duck season starts on January 28 and runs until March 12.

The summer mallard season runs for just two weekends — the first being February 4 and 5, and the second February 11 and 12.

The summer season is timed to coincide with the grain and crop harvests in the North Canterbury area, and offers a great opportunity to harvest some free range game birds for the plate.

Hunters are reminded the summer mallard season is only over agricultural grain crops and green feed paddocks, and more than 200 metres away from any water body.
