Last year the council, through the Waihemo Community Board, agreed to allocate $200,000 of its Better Off funding to the walking track, but the entire project is estimated to cost about $750,000

Last month the council met for its activity update, during which councillors were told the improvements were behind schedule and at risk if additional funding was not secured.

The Puketapu Community Trust has been campaigning for the improvements for five years and is responsible for raising the rest of the funds.
