Waimate to recognise diversity with cultural jersey

The club is set to unveil a cultural jersey with Maori and Pasifika markings at its club day next weekend. The jersey, to worn by the senior side, was created to acknowledge the Maori, Tongan, Samoan, Fijian and other cultural influences in the team

Last season, the club performed a haka in the South Canterbury competition’s culture round. While a culture round was not looking likely this season, president Matt Hayman said the club had taken it upon itself to recognise its diversity.

‘‘I’m really proud of [the jersey] and really proud of the involvement for everyone that’s made it what it is,’’ Hayman said.

‘‘It’s a small token to try and give back to these guys who have obviously left their families, friends, and come to New Zealand, or Waimate even, to give and be a part of our community.’’

Former coaches Kilifi Fangupo, Tai Halalele and Pelenapa Mafi, who finished up in 2020, had left a big impression on the club culturally.

‘‘There are still things, that even our new coach [Hami Goldsmith], have brought in, songs and that sort of thing — it’s still a part of the club.’’

The jersey would become the seniors club day jersey for the next couple of seasons, he said.

The seniors have been strong this season, sitting fourth in the premier A grade behind Temuka, Celtic and Harlequins, which Waimate beat two weeks ago.

It was an experienced side, wix players having more than 100 caps for the club, and many having well over 50 caps.
