Clutha District Council chief executive Steve Hill says, overall, the response to the council’s new vehicles on beaches bylaw has been positive

Hang on a minute. The bylaw was only introduced on January 1.

It doesn’t impose any speed limits or prevent access to any Clutha beaches.

In fact, reporting tells us people using beaches, including a Doc (Department of Conservation) officer, were unaware any new regulations were in place.

Following the urging of local residents, information signs have been placed at Papatowai but, as far as we know, not yet at other beaches.

Yes, there is some anecdotal evidence that there have in fact been fewer vehicles on some beaches this summer, and that drivers have behaved more considerately.

Perhaps the controversy stirred up during the submission process...
