Mindful co-operation needed for move

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is alway keen to remind motorists to drive with care in the Clutha district around the first of the month and the following long weekend as they are likely to encounter mobs of cows on some roads.

Farmers intending to drive their stock will need consent from the NZTA to move animals along or across state highways.

This year’s Moving Day is complicated by the King’s Birthday weekend holiday, which means there may be more than the usual traffic on Clutha roads.

Motorists need to be mindful about coming across herds on the road.

Farmers will be just as keen to get their animals off the tarmac as motorists are, and they appreciate your patience until they have managed their stock and assisted you to pass clearly, so please do not sound your horn, as it will frighten the animals and could lead to longer delays.

Their advice is to plan ahead and allow extra time when travelling through the Clutha district this long weekend.

NZTA Moving Day tips for farmers:

■ Plan ahead with your whole team.

■ Use the most direct route to move stock and cross or follow public roads only if it is necessary.

■ Move stock during daylight hours and avoid peak morning and afternoon travel times.

■ Keep the stock off well-maintained road verges.
